Eastern Sunrise Cabin

Eastern, Maine, United States

Details

Accommodates: 5

Bedrooms: 2

Bathrooms: 1

Description

Early risers will rejoice in greeting the sun over an hour earlier than the western edge of the time zone. Eastern Sunrise Cabin resides in the very easternmost county in the country. Mornings here offer a truly special solitude. This cozy, rustic cabin has 250 feet of private waterfront on pristine Six Mile Lake, approximately 8 miles from the ocean. Six Mile Lake is so named because it is approximately six miles from the nearest major town of Machias, population 2,500. This is a secluded spot with no visible neighbors, 10 minutes by car from the town of Machias. Enjoy watching the loons, paddling in our canoe, fishing, and excellent, weed-free swimming, and nightly campfires. An excellent base camp for guests to explore the area. Nearby hiking, canoeing and kayaking, and mountain biking offer spectacular views of Maine’s “Bold Coast.”

Dogs of any size or type are welcome at the cabin and have plenty of space to safely roam off-leash. Dogs that like to swim really love this property, and owners can relax as long as their dogs are unlikely to wander off. (No large or otherwise problematic mammals have been seen on this property – just red squirrels and chipmunks.)

Open April through November

Activities

This sparsely populated, scenic part of Maine provides plentiful opportunity for:

Canoeing, Kayaking, Fishing, Mountain Biking, Jeeping

  • Canoeing and kayaking on the lake (the cabin is on a 2-acre property with 250 feet of private shorefront). The lake is approximately one mile long and 22 feet deep. The water is extremely clean and there is a resident family of loons. No motorboats allowed. Canoe available for guests to use. Numerous larger lakes nearby for those wishing to explore.
  • Trout fishing in the lake (please observe regulations)
  • Moose can occasionally be seen in fields and bogs accessed by camp or logging roads near the property, for those willing to go out (by car) before sunrise.
  • Mountain biking near the Sunrise Trail (former rail line), which goes through the woods and along the Machias River (several parking areas along Route One, including one directly across from Dunkin Donuts). http://www.sunrisetrail.org
  • Many hiking trails along Cobscook Bay and the Bold Coast trails in Lubec  http://www.cobscooktrails.org/home.html
  • Kayaking around Cobscook Bay
  • Whale watching from Lubec (45 minutes by car) and Eastport (one hour)
  • Blueberry picking in August. (Washington County, Maine is a major producer of blueberries). Wild blackberries and raspberries can also be found along logging roads, and while that land is technically private, harvesting them on this type of land is certainly tolerated as long as your vehicle is not blocking the road or in the way of logging trucks.)

Recommendations

  • Canoeing and kayaking on Six Mile Lake is very relaxing and can be done directly from the property.
  • Walking along the Machias River on the Sunrise Trail is relaxing and includes lovely views. This is a dog-friendly trail along mostly flat terrain.
  • Hiking on Bold Coast trails and at Quoddy Head State Park provides spectacular views of Maine’s rocky coastline. A personal favorite is the Klondike Mountain Trail near the town of Lubec, which is a quick hike, less than one mile round trip and offers stunning ocean views.
  • Cobscook State Park (dog-friendly) has excellent picnic areas overlooking the ocean.
  • Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge offers excellent birding (Maine has numerous species of summer resident warblers, among other specialties.)
