Colorado Cabin of Tomichi

Central, Colorado, United States

Accommodates: 3

Bedrooms: 1

Bathrooms: 1

An opportunity to retreat to the wilds of the high country with minimal, but key, comforts that make for an easy escape. This is the vision that the owners of the Tomichi Lodge property have maintained for 37 years, at a property that offers disconnection from the hustle and bustle of daily life, so that you can reconnect with both loved ones and nature.

The Colorado Cabin is a base camp for outdoor enthusiasts to recreate and rejuvenate in the heart of the Colorado Rocky Mountains about an hour west of Salida. The intimate cabin is perfect for two, but can sleep three, and offers limited electricity produced by a mini hydroelectric system. Wood-fired hot tubs are also on site and enjoyed seasonally. Beyond these basics, there is a true sense of liberation from 21st century distractions. You will not find a TV, internet connectivity or cell coverage on the property.

Immerse yourself in the the beauty every season has to offer at Tomichi. Summer provides a refreshing escape from the heat with cool high altitude trails for hiking, biking, jeeping and off-roading. Afterwards, take a cooling dip in the Tomichi Creek, which runs through the property. In the fall, golden aspens paint the mountainside. With no full-time winter residents in the area in winter, the remote solitude of the property is magnified during this time. This leaves you and the pristine wilderness surrounding the cabin, with its ample backcountry and cross-country skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, and snowshoeing opportunities. The spring also offers excellent late season skiing as the landscape shakes off its winter slumber, aspens budding amidst the sparkle of snowmelt. Guests typically can start driving up to the cabin around the 1st of June.

Neighboring the cabin is Tomichi Lodge, a spacious backcountry hunting lodge built in 1979, capable of accommodating 20 or more guests, and Buckhorn Cabin, a charming cabin offering beds for five. These additional accommodations are available for booking as well, either independently or in conjunction with the Colorado Cabin. The entire property will provide a wonderful setting for retreats, family reunions and special events.

Open May through September

Tomichi Lodge is currently undergoing renovations. Check back for availability. Buckhorn Cabin and Colorado Cabin (CO cabin only seasonally) are available for rentals.

Near: Monarch Pass, CO (about an hour west of Salida and an hour east of Gunnison)

Summer: Access is off HWY 50 between Monarch and Gunnison (about 10 miles west of Monarch Ski Area and 33 miles east of Gunnison, CO), and about 11 miles north on CR 888.

Due to wintery conditions, guests typically can drive up to the lodge June 1 - October 15. A vehicle with good clearance is mandatory and 4WD is highly recommended.

Winter: In the winter (this can be mid-October into May) the lodge is a 5.5 mile hike/ski along a road. It is easy to follow. From the parking lot trailhead on CR 888 there is an elevation gain of approximately 1,000 feet. Snowmobile shuttles are available.

Difficulty: Mild to moderate

The area provides an abundance of opportunity, in one of the most scenic areas of beautiful Colorado, for:

Hiking, Skiing, Snowshoeing, Fishing, Mountain biking, Trail running, Big game hunting, Dogsledding, Hot springs, Snowmobiling, Horseback Riding, Four-Wheeling, Rafting, Kayaking, and SUPing on the Arkansas River

The lodge offers access to some of the most stunning scenery in Colorado with wonderful hiking, trail running, horseback riding, and mountain biking on the Canyon Creek Trail, which runs through the property. Additionally, the Monarch Crest Trail is 19 miles away. There are also numerous opportunities to summit massive Rocky Mountain peaks, with a handful of 12,000’+ peaks and one 13,000’+ peak located at the upper end of Tomichi Valley. If you’re looking to bag some 14’ers you’ve come to the right place -- Chaffee County is home to twelve 14,000’+ peaks.

The area also provides excellent off-roading for Jeeps, ATV’s, and dual-sports can be found just up from our lodge. Tomichi Pass is a very challenging and rewarding drive for off-road enthusiasts. Hancock, Tin Cup and Marshall Passes are also located within a half-day drive from the lodge. Jeep rentals can be easily arranged.

Finally, the Tomichi Lodge is an excellent place for hunters, as it is located within Big Game Unit 551. Many hunters return annually due to the lodge's location and 10,300' elevation, which provides amazing access to high country hunting grounds and healthy populations of both mule deer and elk. Hunting season typically runs from late August through mid-November.
