Northern, New Mexico, United States
Whether it’s solace, inspiration or adventure, you’ll find it at Leela House, a one-of-a-kind Santa Fe retreat. Totally off the grid, with rainwater catchment and photovoltaic solar panels, the 700 square foot strawbale casita sits on Glorietta Mesa, just 20 miles southeast of the cultural heart of New Mexico, Santa Fe. The grounds of the casita resonate peace, with a small Shiva cave temple built within two large rock formations, accessible via a short hike above the casita. If local outdoor explorations are calling, the owners, Kali and Sonja, would welcome the opportunity to be your personal kayak or mountain bike guide through the amazing landscape that surrounds you. They will also be happy to educate you on the ins-and-outs of the property’s systems and permaculture design practices.
Leela House has a bedroom, living room, kitchen with propane fridge and range and small bathroom that features a Japanese tub with a shower, as well as a toilet and vanity. The parking sits a short distance below the casita. Follow a path with solar lights and roughly 30 steps up to the dwelling. You may not drive to the door, but the owners can portage your luggage in their solar powered golf cart when you arrive and depart. It is 500 feet, yet out of sight, from the owners’ home and another small rental casita, providing privacy and respite, with the option of close company and communication should you need it.
This feeling of remoteness and solitude extends to the property itself, which sits on 40 acres at the end of a dirt road with ten other homes, many built by Kali, that are also on large parcels and hidden from view. Meanwhile, there is nothing for roughly 80 miles beyond it to the south. But this is also a small, but vibrant, community of intrepid off-the-gridders, with Kali and Sonja’s retreat providing a gathering place each Sunday for the neighbors to enjoy tea, cake, and friendly games of ping pong.
*A note about nightly minimum requirements:
Booking within two months of your stay requires a 2 night minimum

Location and Access
Near: Santa Fe
The casita is 20 minutes from the closest grocery store and about 30 minutes to the Santa Fe Plaza. The last four miles of the road is dirt, and can have muddy and slippery stretches in a wet winter or on the rare occasion of very rainy weather. For that reason 4WD is recommended. The parking area is below the casita.
For a reasonable fee, Kali and Sonja are excited to guide you on a New Mexico adventure -- and are well equipped for the task! Let them take you out, or at least point you in the right direction, so that you may make the most of your time in the “land of enchantment” with its ample:
Hiking, Mountain biking, Kayaking, Rafting, Skiing, Snowshoeing, Hot springs soaking, Bouldering
Experience the famed galleries and restaurants of Santa Fe. Don’t miss the multi-media spectacle of Meow Wolf, described as “combination jungle gym, haunted house, children’s museum, and immersive art exhibit” (meowwolf.com). The property and the surrounding area are also a climbers’ paradise, with large rock formations nestled above the casita. Or a ten minute hillside hike takes you to the owner-built meditation temple. Let the owners be your guide on a hiking or biking day trip, or guide you on kayaks or canoes on the Abiquiu reservoir (1.5 hours away) or the Rio Grande River. There will be an additional charge for guided day trips, just ask.
