Description
Welcome to a one-of-a-kind Santa Fe retreat, totally off grid, using rainwater catchment and solar-power using photovoltaic panels. The Marpa House is partially built of strawbale. It sits on Glorietta Mesa, just 20 miles Southeast of New Mexico’s cultural center, Santa Fe. The property is on 40 acres at the end of a dirt road with ten other houses (many built by the owner) that are also on large parcels and hidden from view, with nothing for roughly 80 miles beyond it to the south. This is truly a place to get away and find peace, especially in the small shiva cave temple carved into the rock, a short hike above the casita. However, adventures are also easy to come by. The owners would love to be your personal kayak or mountain bike guide. With amazing country in every direction, providing solace or adventure, this is an incredible getaway you will never forget. The owner will be happy to educate you on all his off grid systems from rainwater catchment to permaculture practices.
Marpa House has a bedroom/living room, kitchen (with propane fridge and range) and dining room, and a small half bath with shower and sink. Your restroom is an outhouse a short distance from the patio off the bedroom. The casita sits a 300 feet, yet out of sight, from the owners’ home and another rental casita. But if it’s privacy and respite you seek, you will find it here.
The parking sits below the casita. There is a path with solar lights up to the dwelling. You may not drive to the door, but the owners can portage your luggage in their solar powered golf cart when you arrive and depart.
On Sundays the Retreat is a gathering place for the small off-the-grid solar community in the valley where neighbors often enjoy tea, cake, and ping pong.
*A note about nightly minimum requirements:
Booking within two months of your stay requires a 2 night minimum
Booking from two to six months out from your stay requires a 7 night minimum

Location and Access
Near: Santa Fe
The casita is 20 minutes from the closest grocery store and about 30 minutes drive to the Santa Fe plaza. The last four miles of the road is dirt and can have muddy and slippery stretches in a wet winter or on the rare occasion of very rainy weather. For that reason 4WD is recommended.
The parking area is below the casita. There are steps illuminated at night by solar lights up a path to get to the casita. Owners can transport your luggage in a solar-powered golf cart.
Activities
The owners are excited to take you exploring and are equipped for nearly any adventure. Let them take you out or point you in the right direction so you may make the most of your time in the “land of enchantment” by:
Hiking, Mountain biking, Kayaking, Rafting, Skiing, Snowshoeing, Hot springs soaking, Bouldering, Ping pong
Recommendations
Experience galleries and restaurants Santa Fe is famous for. Don’t miss Meow Wolf, an “unprecedented art experience” for all ages. Rock climbers will find a paradise here in the large rock formations nestled above the casita. Hike ten minutes up the hillside and meditate at the temple built by the owners. Let the owners be your guide on a hiking or biking day trip. Or let them take you kayaking or canoeing in Abiquiu reservoir, 1.5 hours away, or the Rio Grande River near Taos or Dixon. There will be an additional charge for guided day trips, just ask.
