Description

A picture-perfect log cabin sits at the end of a winding dirt road, the only structure visible in a mountain wilderness panorama. It sounds like a cinematic dream -- and you may pinch yourself a few times during your stay at the San Juan Cabin. Located on Hastings Mesa at an elevation of 9,000 feet, the cabin was built in 1999 out of hand-crafted Scandinavian Engelmann spruce logs. The cabin is perched on the side of a ridge overlooking Willow and Meadow Creeks, the lone structure on 78 acres dotted with groves of aspen, oak, and ponderosa pine. Its location location outside of Telluride is convenient, and provides spectacularly large views of the region's most famous peaks, including Mt. Sneffels, Mears Peak, North Pole, the San Miguel range and the extinct volcano, Lone Cone.

San Juan Cabin is remote yet easily accessible to Telluride (30 min) Ridgway (20 min) and Montrose (1 hour). The trip to Telluride can be by highway or the scenic and historic stage coach route known as Last Dollar Road. The location puts you in the heart of the wilderness yet provides an easy drive to town or the regional airport in Montrose.

Wildlife is abundant here. Deer and elk are everyday sites along with coyote, turkey, grouse, and eagle. Bobcat, porcupine and bear are occasional visitors. Wildflowers abound in May, June and July with fields thick with lupine and arrowroot. Autumn colors are awesome with red oaks and aspens streaking purple and gold along the mountainside.

Trails and dirt roads right out the front door offer amazing adventures hiking and biking. There is also great biking on nearby abandoned railroad grades. You can hike on the National Forest trails with access from many of the neighboring roads. Hot springs beckon at both Ouray and Ridgway. The deck’s telescope lets you view stars so bright it will give you a childlike sense of wonder and awe.

The 3,000 sq ft cabin has a full kitchen as well as a partial kitchen on the lower level allowing privacy if two families wish to share the space. The cabin runs on solar and wind power. Heating comes from passive solar and a stone fireplace, the fireplace has catalytic combustion for low emissions. The water supply for the cabin comes from a well which is pumped by solar power into a 1,200 gallon cistern, then with gravity pressure it comes into the cabin. When the cistern is full the excess water goes into an overflow pipe and comes out in a fountain near the front door which waters the ground around the area.
Open April 14 to November 17th
