Description
The Ojo Hideaway, located ten minutes south of the Spa at Ojo Caliente, lies in the bosque of the Rio Ojo Caliente, with about a half mile of the river running through it. This is classic northern New Mexico cottonwood/willow forest at its best, where visitors can live in harmony with the abundant wildlife, including beavers, elk, hawks, and many more.
The bosque section of the land, affectionately called ‘The Ojo,’ abuts spectacularly wild desert badlands and the Black Mesa to the west. The property is 116 acres which stretches across the highway. Here one may follow Shadow Mountain Trail as it ascends 1,000 vertical feet to the lonely mesa top. This private trail affords an opportunity to see the entire valley in one sweeping gaze, as well as all the area’s famous landmarks -- Pedernal, Pueblo Peak and the southern end of the Sangre de Cristo mountains.
Feet from the cabin you will find a 1.5 mile trail venturing into the neighboring BLM land, offering the high desert’s solitude and pristine beauty. Walk the classic seven-ring labyrinth, be inspired by the Hideaway’s 26-foot tipi, or find a lonely pool along the river and take a cooling dip. Over 60 species of birds either live here or are regular visitors. Humming birds, lizards, and crickets galore will delight children or adults with youthful exuberance. Don’t be afraid to ask the owner, Dave, for tips both onsite and off.
The Ojo Hideaway is centrally located for travel in northern New Mexico. It is just ten miles south of The Spa at Ojo Caliente, 45 minutes from Santa Fe, one hour from Taos, and 20 minutes to Abiquiu, the home of Georgia O’Keefe.

Recommendations
When the water’s up in the spring raft through the Taos Box. When the water’s low, take a bike ride on the West Rim trail for one of the easiest and most incredibly beautiful rides around. Climbers should venture to Tres Piedras, some of the best rock climbing in northern NM, and just an hour away. But just spending time on the property meditating, hiking the many trails, or just kicking it in the cool water on a hot afternoon is worth the trip in and of itself.
