Description

The Wolf Creek Yurt is a 20’ yurt nestled in a peaceful drainage basin in the spectacular and seldom explored southern Rocky Mountains, three miles southeast of Colorado's Wolf Creek Pass. It is situated in a large sunny spot in a valley populated by two creeks, dozens of wildflowers, birds, deer, and elk. Renowned for abundant snowfall, the Wolf Creek Yurt lies at 10,250 feet, just below the Continental Divide. In winter months you'll find excellent terrain for skiers of all ability levels, snowboarders, and snowshoers. Summer brings opportunity for mountain biking, hiking, trail running, and so much more, with the Continental Divide Trail just minutes away. Alberta Lake, just 1.5 miles away, offers opportunities to swim and fish.

Closed in May due to lack of access with melting snow.

Location and Access

Near: Pagosa Springs, CO and Wolf Creek Pass

Summer: Six miles on a 2WD road, then a 1 mile hike on a road, with about 200 feet elevation gain.

Winter: Three mile easy to moderate ski in, mostly on roads, with 400 feet of elevation gain on the way in and 1,000 feet of elevation gain in on the way out.

Difficulty: Mild

Please note: The Wolf Creek Yurt is located in an area where snowfall can be heavy, making for difficult and slow trail-breaking. Poor visibility may require navigational skills using a map & compass to locate the Yurt.

Activities
High in the mountains, with abundant wildflowers or famous "Wolf Creek" powder, near the Continental Divide in Weminuche and South San Juan Mountains there are many opportunities to enjoy:
Skiing, Snowshoeing, Fishing, Hiking, Mountain biking, Trail running, ATVing

Recommendations

In winter, explore the north-facing, powder packed slopes right out the door. Most of the surrounding area is not avalanche terrain, but there are areas that are steep enough to slide. Steep shots for those who have the avalanche knowledge & skiing skills will have you rejoicing. Those who prefer more gentle entertainment can delight in cruising around on old logging roads.

Summer and fall mountain biking enthusiasts love the access to the 17 miles of non-Wilderness Continental Divide Trail and miles more of Forest Service road. USFS road is open to ATVs.

Hikers can access the Continental Divide Trail via a 30 minute 600' vertical hike from the yurt and explore Alberta Lake, Silver Pass, Silver Peak, and Bonito Pass from there.
